Better Late Than Never....

Just to recap the month of November, our spent time down at the Humane Society walking some of the new puppies that arrived. Arturo and I spent some time running around the back kennel like losers having them chase us. If you happened to be driving by, I am sure it was a sight to see. November was probable one of our quieter months during the semester though, our group had a lot going on with classes and swimming so we were a little bit behind our schedule but caught up fairly fast. So, this is just a little recap of the month of November for all of those inquiring minds. I am sure that all of you were freaking out not knowing what was going on during that month, but do not worry...all is well. Peace out and happy holidays. Yall have a good one.

HEY YALL!!!

Well we wrapped up this semester learning some valuable knowledge and learned a lot about our group as well as many things that we need to get better at. This month our group was able to go to Pets Warehouse and spend $100 on a variety of different toys, bones, treats, food, and leashes to give to the Southwest Humane Society. We also were able to update our doggie pics from that last visit from this past weekend. AND we have many events to look forward to within the next couple of weeks! We will have some lovely T-shirts available, which all proceeds will go to the Southwest Humane Society. As well as getting some cute lil dogs to come to Drury for a Hound Dog Homecoming!! Many events to look forward to in the next coming year!! It has been a great year at the Southwest Humane Society, and we are looking forward to having a much more accomplishing semester next year. Although we have learned that we need to actually start signing in when we get there which we usually seem to forget, our time spent next year will hopefully make a bigger impact. Also, our awareness campaign will be kicked off next year, so PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR SOUTHWEST HUMANE SOCIETY WEEK!!!! Happy Holidays and God Bless.

Hola 3

Hello everyone the semester is coming to an end everybody has been busy with projects, homeworks, exams etc including us. but we still found time to go and help at the humane society. Taylor and I went the other day for a couple of ours and had a great time over there, we played with little puppies and even helped with a couple of prospect adoptions, the surprising part was that I watched my first dog fight while volunteering. you might expect that when a fight starts it will be between big or medium sized dogd, well in this case it wasnt. 4 little puppies started brawling each other till 2 of them got upset and a fight started we had to separate them but blood actually came out, after a quick revision the puppies went back to play time like nothing had happened. Puppies keep coming into the Humane Society every day including puppies if you are planning to get or give a pet as a present please take the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri in consideration they have great animals and you will be helping the community.

Another good day!

As we end the semester with all the tests and projects due, the work at the Humane Society is never ending. I have been helping the Humane Society with walking dogs and and playing with the cats. Today, Taylor and I went to Pet Smart to buy things that the Humane Society needs like toys for both dogs and cats, treats, and many more. It was a busy day for the Humane Society because they are having an occasion today, the "Treat Day" and "Deck the Halls". There were also a lot of people coming in to look for dogs to be adapted.I am glad to say that the Humane Society was very pleased with the donations that we have given to them. Today, we also walked some dogs but our time was primarily contributed to folding newspapers to be brought to the kennels. This was an important part of a volunteer's job besides walking dogs because the kennels needs to be cleaned continuously and without the newspapers, they would not be able to replace the dirty newspapers with clean ones.I am glad that I was there today providing help to the shelter and making the workers job easier. I would say that volunteers are a really big part of the Humane Society because they only rely on donations from people. I have learned so much this first semester about the Humane Society. I learned to really manage my time more because swimming and school, together with the Summit Program, there's basically no time to do other things. I really need to manage my time day by day and week by week. I am learning that right now because after missing two weeks of school because I had a swim meet in China, I am way behind in school, practice is still going on and I still need to go to Humane Society to volunteer. Going to the Humane Society is my stress reliever because I don't think of school or swimming but just having fun with dogs. Volunteering for the Humane Society for me is not a burden but a fun and relaxing moment for me. Regarding our projects for the Humane Society, I could see our projects really taking of next semester because we've had a lot of technical difficulties with some of our projects but I am confident that we will be able get those projects moving. I am excited for the next semester and the challenges that we will face and how we will handle it as a group.

Humane Society and T-shirts

Hey everyone,

It has been a while since I have blogged. There is a lot going on both at the Humane Society and at here at Drury. It is almost Christmas time and what better to get a loved one than a new puppy? Guys - what girl doesn't want a cute new puppy... it is a great time of year to adopt a dog or cat and make a difference. The humane society hasn't had any new events or plan on having any in the near future.

Here at Drury we are still working out the details on the t-shirt sales. We decided it would be easier on everyone to create a website with all the information on how to order a shirt. We should have the link for that soon and it will be posted on the blog. We hope everyone contributes a little bit by purchasing a shirt for seven dollars. I know its not free but we are not as rich as SUB!

Next semester after holiday break we are planning a big event here at Drury. We are planning on doing a Hound Dog Homecoming of our own similar to the one the Humane Society did. WE will find the cutest dogs at the shelter and we will bring them on a day trip to Drury and students will vote on which one they like the best by donating money to that dogs jar. Hopefully we will be able to raise a bunch of money.

We have also been doing a Stress Free project online. It has been a good experience and we have been able to do tai-chi, yoga, acupuncture and get free massages. I personally am not a big fan of some of the events but it is cool to be exposed to the different types of stress relief people use. It has been especially nice with finals coming up soon.

Over winter break I am going to be on a cruise in the Caribbean with my family. The last family vacation before my sister goes out into the real world. Then when i come back from that i will be going to Hawaii with the swim team for two weeks to train. Its going to be a bit of heaven and hell. Im excited.

I hope you all have a great break and consider adopting a dog or cat from the humane society this holiday season.

See you all soon!!!

T-Shirts and MORE!!!

Hey everybody. This week an email was sent out to all the student body trying to raise money for the Humane Society by selling our t-shirts for $7. This is a really cheap price for all you trying to save a dime. We would really like to sell fifty shirts MINIMUM!! all the money will be donated to the humane society in some way, shape or form. We will be using the money to buy necessary items that the humane society would have to buy themselves. You wouldn't believe the amount of Lysol wipes and Clorox bleach they go through. Also, we will be starting a recycling center for newspapers for a week. They like to have a ton of papers to put in the cat boxes and cages.

While volunteering this week, we got some great footage of us working with the dogs and what we do. It will be used in our end of the year presentation. It should give a pretty good description and idea of what we do for an average day at the humane society. Taylor, Arturo and I have been videotaping a few sessions and have some interviews with employees as well as other volunteers. Our presentation should give a good representation and hopefully motivate others to join our cause.

Next week we will be taking more footage at the humane society. Next semester we came up with the idea to bring some dogs from the humane society to the commons and have a dog beauty pageant. they did this at the Humane society over the summer and it raised a bunch of money. the dog that wins the competition is the one that has the most money in the jar. It is a quick and effective way to make a couple hundred dollars which doesn't seem like a lot, but every little bit helps.

We have had a good month working at the Humane society this month and have had a lot of good experiences. WE hope to keep on having a good time working with the staff and the wonderful animals at the humane society.

COME ADOPT!!!! ITS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND EVERYONE LOVES A PUPPY!! AND IF THEY DONT THEY LOVE KITTIES!!! WE HAVE BOTH!! GET ONE FOR YOU PARENTS!! ONLY $100 FOR THE DOG OF YOUR CHOICE TO BE SPADE/NEUTERED, DEWORMED, AND HAVE ALL UP TO DATE SHOTS!!! DOGS/CATS READY TO GO HOME TODAY!!!

GET YOUR T-SHIRTS!!!!!

Hey yall! within the next week or so, the Panthers for Paws group will be selling t-shirts outside the commons at Drury University.  The shirts will be around seven dollars so they will be fairly cheap. All the money that will be made from the shirts will go towards buying cleaning supplies and doggy treats, as well as kitty toys and much more!! Plus the t-shirts are really cool. Who would't want to walk around campus with a shirt saying, "i heart puppies"? There will be other shirt designs as well, so if you are around the commons during the week, help out the puppies and kitties and buy an awesome shirt! You know you want to....

Good day at the Humane Society

Hey everyone,

I had a pretty good day at the humane society.  I went by myself today in between classes for about an hour.  It was nice to go and see all the new cats and dogs, as well as the old ones.  There are a lot of dogs and cats up and ready for adoption that want a good home.  Today I walked all the little dogs.  It's a nice change for once to walk the small dogs because you can take more than one of them out at a time.  They have had some dog fights between the bigger dogs so they only let us take one at a time.  I was taking out two or three dogs at a time so it was fun for them all to play together.  I only stayed for an hour or so but it was a good trip.  Last time I went, Ryan and i took pictures of all the dogs and they are posted to the side.

We will be doing a fundraiser at Drury next week by selling t-shirts around campus.  We hope to sell fifty shirts or more and donate the profits to the Humane society. We will hopefully be able to buy a bunch of necessities that are constantly needed such as Lysol wipes, dog food, paper towels, etc.

So far this year has been pretty good volunteering.  We have gotten a lot of work done and the staff have been very appreciative of our work. We hope to keep it up.

Another Good Weekend at the Humane Society

Hey everyone, sorry for the delayed post. It was another good day for me yesterday at the Humane Society. A lot of the dogs that Matt and I walked the previous week is already gone yesterday (October 17). I saw a lot of new dogs that are up for adoption but sadly my camera ran out of battery so I never had the chance to take their pictures. The best part was when I was walking the last dog for the day, as I was going to put her in her cage, a family came in and wanted to see her. The family was very interested in adopting the dog but the Humane Society is closed on Sundays so they had to wait until today (Monday). Because they were so excited to see the dog (Lala), they already filled out the application for the adoption. I am fortunate to see a dog getting adopted specially that I was the one who was playing with the dog. It's a great feeling to see those dogs get adopted and I am sure Lala will have a great place and family to live in!

Cats for Adoption now in our Blog!

I'm happy to inform everyone that the cats that are up for adoption are now posted on our blog. Just Remember: NAMES GO FIRST, THEN THE CAT! Have fun watching all the adorable pets! :-)

10-10-10: Amazing day for the Pets!

Today, Matt and I went to the Humane Society for our volunteer work. We walked a lot of dogs today, big and small. We also saw a lot of new cats and dogs which is somewhat a sad part because that means that more pets are being abandoned... but we are happy to walk and play with all of them today! The most important part of our day is taking picture of all the cats and dogs that are ready for adoption. The dogs that are ready for adoption are already up on our blog with their names and breed. The Cats will be up soon. Hopefully this will encourage people not only from Drury but all across Springfield to visit the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri and look for cats and dogs to adopt.

Hola

Hello!! my name is Arturo Castro and I am also part of the panthers for paws team on the past few months me and my friends have been working with the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri  in several tasks but mostly involving cleaning kennels, playing with dogs, taking dogs out for a walk and looking after cats in their game room. this tasks have been fun but also a lot of work since a lot of this dogs spent a lot of their time in their cages, when they go out they are full of energy and they sure pull you with them. I would like to to invite people that read this to take a look at what the humane society has  to offer, we need volunteers to help since its a non-profit organization but most important we need families for the dogs and cats over there, they are really good animals that want just a home and love.

Hound Dog Homecoming

Last weekend Ryan and I went to the Humane society to help clear out the old building for Hound Dog Homecoming.  We pretty much just cleaned out theback area and created new space for a BBQ and activities.  It was a lot of work but when we finished it looked pretty good.

Why I chose Summit Park by Ryan Arabejo

I chose Summit Park because of the experiences that it will give me for future ambitions. I am hoping to gain a lot  about leadership as well as helping the community after this year is over and continue helping the community in any way possible. This program will give me a wide range of knowledge that will help me throughout the career that I'm trying to get.
